Vanadium energy systems for ships

Sustainable energy storage for the next generation of maritime transport

VESS develops vanadium redox flow battery systems for marine applications, designed to meet the growing demands for decarbonization, safety, and long-term operation in shipping. Our solutions are suitable for both new ships and electrification and e-retrofit of existing vessels.

Why choose a vanadium flow battery for ships?

The marine environment requires energy systems with high safety, long life, and minimal maintenance. Vanadium flow batteries offer several advantages over other technologies.

25- 0 +

years of life

The system achieves a service life comparable to, and in some cases longer than, the hull of a ship.

No risk

of fire

The water-based electrolyte and intrinsically safe chemistry eliminate 100% of the risk of overheating and fire.

No degradation

of capacity

VESS vanadium batteries do not need to be replaced every 5-8 years, like lithium batteries.

Low LCOE

over time

The system guarantees a low cost per 1 kWh of energy, considering all costs throughout its life.

Energy systems for electrification and e-retrofit of ships

VESS offers modular vanadium energy systems that can be integrated into:

The systems adapt to the specific ship through flexible configurations of stacks, electrolyte tanks, and pumping modules.

Options for “electrolyte bunkering”

VESS is implementing a recharging technology by replacing the electrolyte. Similar to traditional fuel bunkering, the low-charge electrolyte is drained from the ship and replaced with a charged one. The process is carried out via a two-way pumping system for about 20-30 minutes, after which the vessel can continue its route with full energy capacity. The technology is applicable to:

Shore-based electrolyte charging stations

VESS plans to build a stationary vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) station with a service center in the Black Sea, which will allow all vessels that:

VESS systems create a closed, sustainable, secure, and seamless cycle of products and services that enable you to focus on the processes that create real value for you.

Mobile recharging barges

Electrolyte recharging barges function as floating power stations and are a key element of the VESS marine ecosystem. They consist of the following components:

Business models for the maritime sector

VESS offers flexible business models tailored to the needs of ship operators and port infrastructure

EaaS

Electrolyte-as-a-Service

The system achieves a service life comparable to, and in some cases longer than, the hull of a ship.

VRFB leasing

incl. logistics

VESS vanadium batteries do not need to be replaced every 5-8 years, like lithium batteries.

Partnerships

with public and private companies

The system guarantees a low cost per 1 kWh of energy, considering all costs throughout its life.

How VESS realizes the project

We analyze your needs, energy profiles, and constraints to define the most appropriate solution.

Inquiry and analysis

Preparation of an offer and initial contract

Step 2: Design

We develop an optimal technical and spatial design, tailored to the project, regulations, and future expansion.

Layout design

Detailed project and contract, describing all processes

Step 3: Production

We manufacture and deliver the system in full compliance with the approved project and the set technical parameters without risk to the client in case of discrepancy.

Production according to the finished project

Delivery, installation and adjustments if necessary

Step 4: Integration, commissioning, and maintenance

We install, test, and put the system into real operation with full functional verification. Guarantee against the pre-agreed terms and parameters.
